This is the original syllabus.  It is loaded with different topics in the English language that each student must study in other to pass the JAMB examination smoothly.  Each topic in this English syllabus is supported with solidified objectives that each student is required to focus on.

    The main  reason why JAMB released of use of the English  syllabus is to ensure that every aspirant candidate knows the exert topics that will be set on the examination without beating around the bush and it is designed to prepare candidates on

    1. How they can use English for learning in Higher institutions  and

    2.  How to use English speaking both in writing and communication.

    Area of concentration 

    To pass the JAMB examination, the following are the areas you need to focus on. The syllabus consists consists of three sections. Which are:

    1. Comprehension/ Summary

    Candidates are required to be able to

    A. Identify the main point in every passage that is given.

    B. Candidates should be able to determine the indicated meaning.

    C. Students should be able to identify the grammatical functions of words, phrases, clauses, and figurative/idiomatic expressions.

    D. Students should be able to deduce the writer's intentions including mood and attitude in every passage they want to read or write.



    2. Lexis and structure 

    Candidates are required to adhere to the following.

    A. Identify words and expressions in their ordinary, figurative, and idiomatic expressions.

    B. Determine similar and opposite meanings of words.

    C. Differentiate between correct and incorrect punctuation and spelling.

    D. Identify various grammatical patterns in use.

    E. Interpret information conveyed in sentences.

    3. Oral forms

    Candidates should be able to:

    A. Make a distinction between vowel types.

    B. Differentiate between consonant types.

    C. Identify correct acceleration in individual words and connected speech.

    How many questions does JAMB set for English?

    60 (sixty) questions in total.
    The JAMB management set approximately 60 questions on the English Language examination. These questions are set from the main section of the detailed syllabus. These are - Comprehension/Summary, Lexis and Structure, and Oral Forms.

    The structure of the examination questions 

    Comprehension / Summary has 25 questions.

    Lexis and Structure has 25 questions, and

    Oral Forms 10 questions.

    The English syllabus 

    The syllabus in English has 3 sections, 17 topics, and about 7 subtopics. The following are the syllabus topics:

    1. Descriptive essay.

    2. Narrative essay.

    3. Expository essay.

    4. Argumentative essay.

    5. Synonyms.

    6. Antonyms 

    7. Homonyms.

    8. Clauses and sentence patterns.

    9. Word classes and their function.

    10. Mood, tense, aspect, numbers, concord/agreement, degree, and question tags.

    11. Publications and spellings

    12. Figure of speech and idiomatic expression.

    13. Vowel sounds.

    14. Consonant sounds

    15. Rhymes.

    16. Word stress.

    17.  Intonation.
