If you are preparing for admission you need to know the required JAMB cut-off marks that you must pass to be able to study at the University of your choice.
This article will explain the meaning of the JAMB cut-off mark and how to calculate it.
What is the JAMB cut-off mark?
JAMB cut-off marks or the JAMB score are the scores you pass in your Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). It is the scores obtained from the combination of the pass a candidate had in the four subjects written in the JAMB examination. It is the scores sent to you after you have written your examination
The cut-off marks are what the JAMB management uses to rate candidates' performance as to whether they can be screened for admission or not.
Educational institutions in Nigeria have various cut-off marks that are approved by JAMB. Federal government universities have their set marks and state and private universities also have theirs down to various polytechnics
The possibility of a student being chosen is if he or she has a score that matches the institution's cut-off mark. The score of a student must be the same or higher than the standard score set by JAMB before they can be chosen by the university.
Remember JAMB cut-off marks do not guarantee that you can gain straight admission into the university of your choice.
The university you are applying to will still need to check whether you meet the qualifications for the course you want to study.
For example, let's say a student who registered for medicine, and has a score of 200 on his JAMB examination. Let's say he chooses the University of Lagos as his choice. We know that the JAMB cut-off mark for UNILAG is 200. At the look of things, we will say this student pass it. But not so well how UNILAG will consider It because the score is not enough to study medicine. Medicine is a competitive course in school. To study medicine in this case the student may do well to score more than 250 and above to get a chance of gaining admission.
The same applies to any other competitive course you want to study.

Is the JAMB cut-off mark the same as the department mark?
No, they are different. JAMB cut-off marks are given by the JAMB management while the department or cumulative mark is given by individual universities.
How to calculate JAMB cut-off marks
JAMB cut-off mark is simple to calculate. To calculate it, add the score you get from the four subjects you wrote in your JAMB examination. For example, mathematics 80, physics 60, Chemistry 86, and English language 76. Therefore, the student cut-off mark is 80 + 60 + 86 + 76 = 302.
